Who We Are

The Health Systems Node (HSN) of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN) is led by Cynthia Campbell, PhD, MPH  at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of ResearchKatharine Bradley, MD, MPH at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle and Ingrid Binswanger, MD, MPH, MS at the Kaiser Permanente Colorado Institute for Health Research. The HSN partners with 18 health systems across the United States prepared to conduct pragmatic trials. This includes 12 large health systems in the Health Care Systems Research Network, 3 networks of Federally Qualified Health Centers, the Veterans Health Administration, and 2 affiliated hospitals. The health systems participating in the HSN have embedded researchers, with nation-wide reach, conducting practical substance use research in real world health care settings.

Our goals are to:

  1. Improve health outcomes of substance use and substance use disorder for individuals who are not in treatment, by testing prevention programs and programs that increase engagement in effective treatments.
  2. Improve substance use disorder treatment outcomes, by testing promising treatments in medical settings.
  3. Improve the rigor of pragmatic trials through methodological innovation through improved measures and methods.
