Testing approaches to increase identification of substance use, substance use disorder, and engagement in treatment
Testing new approaches to improve substance use disorder outcomes in medical settings
Developing novel measures and methods for substance use disorder research using electronic health records
The Health Systems Node (HSN) is a collaboration of investigators who conduct substance use and substance use disorder research embedded in 16 health systems across the United States, sponsored by the
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN).
As embedded researchers within health care systems as part of the
Health Care Systems Research Network (HCSRN) or the
Veterans Health Administration, Investigators in the Node have extensive expertise conducting pragmatic trials and observational comparative effectiveness research aimed at improving substance use and substance use disorder related care in medical settings.
The HSN is led by Dr. Cynthia Campbell at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research and Dr. Katharine Bradley at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. Dr. Constance Weisner also continues to participate as an Other Significant Contributor after transitioning from her Multiple Principal Investigator role. Learn more.

The Health Systems Node
Leads and participates in pragmatic trials to test innovative approaches to improving medical care for patients with substance use and substance use disorders, such as the PROUD trial (CTN-0074) and
COMPUTE 2.0 (CTN-0095).
Conducts embedded comparative effectiveness and other health services research using innovative health systems data, such as
HEDIS AOD-IET Measure Performance (CTN-0072-OT), the
Prescription Opioid Registry CTN-0084), and the DTECT Study (CTN-0084-A-2)
Conducts innovative research aimed at improving clinical measures for substance use and substance use disorders in EHRs, such as the
Medical Cannabis Use Among Primary Care Patients project (CTN 0077-OT) and
Validating a DSM-5 Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Symptom Checklist in EHR Data (CTN 0113)
All projects are embedded in health systems, such as those in the
Health Care System Research Network, the
Veterans Health Administration, and other health care organizations.
